Online Job Scams: Fake Jobs Costing Victims Thousands of Dollars

Online job scams are at an all-time high. Companies offering salaries as high as us$4,000 are luring thousands of victims every month. So, if you are a job seeker, this is the article you don’t want to miss.

Online jobs scams: too good to be true jobs

Jasmine robinson, a job seeker from long island, n.Y., was on cloud nine when she cleared the interview for her ‘dream job.’ first, a company named obsidian entertainment offered a payment of $55 an hour. Next came a check for $8,000. Supposedly, to buy work-from-home equipment for better productivity.

But, there was something fishy. From applying for the job to onboarding, everything was moving really quickly. Though the company had many documents to show its ‘legitimacy,’ jasmine couldn’t take a chance. So, she researched, and all her suspicion proved true. The job was a scam. The scammers were luring victims by offering a high-paying online job and an $8000 joining bonus. However, as soon as they get the victim’s bank and card details, they withdraw all their savings.Jasmine was amongst the lucky few to avert the danger. But, in fear of being scammed, she had to deactivate her card and bank account.A similar large-scale ‘pig butchering’ case was brought to light earlier this month. Fake profiles of over a thousand chinese spacex engineers on linkedin scammed millions of dollars.

Over $58.5 million lost in job scam in the first half of 2022

With over 3,500 cases reported and over $58.5 million lost, job scams have topped the list of top 10 online scams list issued by the straits times. Followed by phishing, e-commerce, and investment scams accounting for 74.5% of all online scams in the first half of 2022.“these (online job) scammers are typically part of organized criminal groups and run sophisticated transnational operations which are not easy to detect or dismantle.”

Singapore police

The number was significantly higher compared to 2021, during the same period. While some fraudsters scam victims for their personal information, many also hire people for fake data entry jobs or something shady, like reshipping expensive items purchased via stolen credit cards. How do the fake jobs trap you?Scammers use multiple fraudulent ways to trap victims in their online job scams. The most popular techniques used include:Fake website Everyone wants some source of extra income, and we turn to google in our search for the perfect online jobs. The scammers know this, so they build a strong website with the best seo tactics to outrank genuine websites on search engines and establish authenticity.

Fake job listingsAll the verified job listing portals, like monster, indeed, etc., ask you to submit all the information about your schooling, address, dob, employment history, and more. However, many scammers can retrieve all your data from these portals.

These scammers usually target victims from tier 2-3 cities or ones who don’t have much educational qualifications. Once they have your contact information, they’ll send you malicious links guaranteeing reputable online jobs or cash rewards.

The re-shipping frauds

One of the online job scams is a re-shipping fraud occasionally promoted as a job opening for “quality control supervisors” or “virtual assistants.” after being employed, your responsibility is to receive packages at your house, repackage them, and frequently send them to an overseas location.Typically, expensive products like gadgets are purchased, and the credit cards used to make the purchases are stolen. Reshipping scam victims claim they were not reimbursed. Reselling expensive goods is a different kind of work-from-home fraud. Victims are informed that they may make money by purchasing name-brand goods below retail and reselling them for a profit. However, when customers pay for the goods, the shipment never materializes.

How to detect the fraud?

Data by the federal trade commission highlights that americans have incurred a loss of over $68 million due to job scams in the first quarter of 2022. And as employment scams get more sophisticated, job seekers need to be vigilant when searching for any new opportunity. Here are some red flags to detect fraud jobs:Upfront fees or payment: companies ask for payment for software installation, company laptops, or even creating credit reports before starting any work.Week business model: unable to justify the business model, how the company makes a profit, or what value the business produces (most common for data entry jobs)

Too good to be true: significantly high payments for negligible effortNo qualification check: similar to the case of jasmines, the recruiter is ready to hire candidates with little to no qualification checks.Fake attempt to build authenticity: when the recruiter sends you evidence to prove their legitimacy, for example, their corporation certificate, cin number, payment proof, etc.

Online job scams: be viginalt, stay safe

With the evolving workplaces and rise in online work opportunities, the threat of job scams is increasing. Especially now, when the world economy is under a looming recession and unemployment is at an all-time highBut not if you analyze every opportunity keenly, ask the right questions, and do all the safety checks before handing over your personal and bank details.

Therefore, always be vigilant for fake jobs and never send money or reveal personal financial information during the hiring process. And, if in doubt, run the staffing agency or company through better business bureau‘s directory.

Demolition Drives in Kashmir- is India Following the Israeli Model in Kashmir?

The J&K government has started a massive demolition drive to reportedly remove encroachments on the state land of Jammu and Kashmir. The district administration of Srinagar launched this massive anti-encroachment campaign across the district on Saturday. As a result, 409 Kanal of State land worth more than Rs 240.58 crore were reclaimed from “powerful land grabbers.”. Meanwhile, Kashmiri intellectuals are alarmed regarding the disturbing pattern which depicts India following the Israeli model in Kashmir.

Kashmiris are historically known to unconditionally show solidarity with Palestinians and continue to do so in the face of the illegal occupation by Israel and its bloody legacy of oppression. Terror-stricken Kashmiris now wonder if theirs will be the fate similar to their brethren in Palestine under the illegal Israeli occupation.

Politicians and people of the public claim that the push also affects poor and common people who have relied on modest landholdings for decades to live or survive. They have expressed deep concerns over the encroachment drive.  Is India following the Israeli model in Kashmir? Manoj Sinha, the J&K LG, promised that only “influential people who exploited their approach to usurp state land” would be targeted instead of underprivileged people.

The Claims of the LG Government

The anti-encroachment operation, according to officials, has begun in all seven of the district’s tehsils, including those of Chanapora, Pantha Chowk, Khanyar, Eidgah, and north and south Srinagar. They asserted that the special anti-encroachment teams set up by the Srinagar district administration and commanded by various tehsildars carried out extensive anti-encroachment drives with the assistance of the Police and other pertinent authorities. The government officials asserted that the continuing anti-encroachment action that was started to regain State property from the intruders had been made plain by the LG government that it would not have an effect on the poor and general public. The officials claim that the LG government further declared that only people who had occupied State land forcibly exploiting their positions would face serious punishment because the administration cared about defending the interests of the poor. Opposition Parties Disapproval

The opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir, including the former CM Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Omar Abdullah’s National Conference, and the party led by the Indian National Congress have been in constant disapproval of the BJP post the removal of Article 370 in the former state of J & K. The Opposition parties have now sought a white paper on the situation amid widespread rumors that land excavators have been dispatched by the administration to all of Kashmir’s districts for the purpose of conducting massive demolition efforts.

Anxieties have only grown since a report detailing the status of land in Kashmir was allegedly removed from the Divisional Commissioner’s (Kashmir) official website. The opposition claims that the administration is arbitrarily targeting people for political purposes in light of the survey’s strange disappearance from the website, which was apparently conducted by J&K’s Revenue Department in 2001 to advance the implementation of the Roshni Act.

According to the Roshni Act, 20.46 lakh kanal of public land was chosen in 2001 for ownership transfer to private parties in exchange for a premium that was projected to bring in Rs 25,000 crore. According to the J&K government, the funds would be used to develop hydropower projects. Despite the fact that there are numerous cases ongoing before the HC challenged the order, the High Court abolished the act in 2018. For the GOI It Will Always Be About The Land

In its monthly newsletter, ‘Speak Up’, released on Sunday, February 5, PDP (People’s Democratic Party) said that in the past three years “the only reforms we have received from the Centre are land laws because for GOI (Government of India) it will always be about the land”. The PDP asserted on Sunday that the present anti-encroachment campaign in Jammu and Kashmir is yet another attempt to “seize our land and cause massive changes to our demography,” and that the Centre has “prioritized” evicting innocent Kashmiris from their homes over tackling unemployment and the safety of Kashmiri Pandits.

The party argued that the Centre’s recent move to arm village defense committees in the Jammu neighborhood of Rajouri testifies to their “myopic vision” of the Kashmir issue, which prevents them from seeing beyond the scope of a gun. “What seems like a simple solution may very well end up creating communal tensions by driving a wedge between the local communities that have been living in harmony up until now,” it said. “Such measures will further add to the apprehensions of the people about the government’s intent to alter our demography by dispossessing the locals and incentivizing outside settlers to take their place. It’s no secret that GOI’s Kashmir policy emulates the Israeli model in Palestine,” the PDP said.Read here, Israel Has No Right to Exist if Palestine Has No Right to Exist

Bulldozers Being Fanned Out To Terrorize People

A former chief minister of J&K Omar Abdullah, said on Monday, February 7, that several lists of purported encroachments are making the rounds on social media. He said that one such list demonstrates how several well-known buildings, including the National Conference headquarters, Governor’s House, UN office, and his residence on Gupkar Road in Srinagar, have been built on encroached land. “This list has disappeared and another is in public domain now. The situation has left everyone anguished. The administration has told the court that these lists are fake, so we want to know the basis on which the bulldozers are being fanned out across J&K to terrorize people,” Omar said.

Chairman of Peoples Conference, Sajad Lone, said that the administration was carrying out the eviction drive arbitrarily, “Not a day passes when the houses of poor people are not being demolished. No notices are being served. No legal procedure is being followed. The law of the land can’t be violated like this,” Sajad said addressing a press conference on Monday. “Ninety-five percent of encroachers in J&K are Muslims while a few others have been thrown into the list to make it look like a fair exercise,” Sajad added.Read here, Israel’s intense Practices to Uproot the Palestinians in Jerusalem

Painful Resemblance with Palestine

As heart-wrenching pictures and videos of displaced Kashmiri families were circulated around social media platforms, people and Kashmiris across the world started voicing their concerns over Kashmir’s painful resemblance with Palestine.

Following a policy developed by radical right-wing ministers in the nation’s new government, Israeli authorities have increased the demolition of Palestinian homes in portions of East Jerusalem and the West Bank, according to local leaders. Buildings in the Jerusalem neighborhoods of Sur Baher, Wadi Al-Hummus, and Silwan were demolished by Israeli bulldozers on Wednesday. Human rights advocates asked people to openly condemn the demolitions by tweeting statements on social media.Since the beginning of this January, occupation forces have razed 30 homes in a number of the historic city’s neighborhoods. Last year, 211 Palestinian homes were demolished in Jerusalem.

Tweeting about the current situation in Kashmir, Ather Zia, a Kashmiri political anthropologist shared a picture of a displaced elderly Palestinian couple as a reference from Palestine and stated that “language of encroachment & demolitions is classic settler colonial logic”.

India Government Unleashes Bulldozer in Kashmir

Straight out of the israeli settler colonial playbook, the indian government has unleashed bulldozers on the houses and businesses of the kashmiri people in kashmir. The government claims that the land which is being cleared is state land encroached upon by the owners. In the same breath, the government claims that it is only influential people who are being targeted. It claims that kashmir-based politicians had encroached on the state land during their rule in kashmir. The government had assured that poor people would not be touched by the eviction drive. However, the claim is far from the truth as common masses have also been evicted.

Using these claims, earlier the government was evicting people arbitrarily. There were some instances where some shops were sealed in srinagar even though the property belonged to the shopkeepers and not the state. Some people had requested the government to make the eviction drive transparent. The government later released a list of thousands of people who have supposedly encroached on the state land. Contrary to the indian government’s claims, the list does not discriminate between the poor and the rich influential people.

Hopelessness and helplessness in kashmir

Even though the eviction drive threatens to make thousands of people in kashmir homeless, the kashmiri people have not yet resisted the move publicly. There have been no protests in kashmir. However, there have been protests by muslims in the hindu-majority jammu region. The eerie silence of the kashmiri people on this matter gives a sense of hopelessness and helplessness to the kashmiri people. Unleashes Bulldozer in Kashmir  The indian government has so intimidated kashmiri people that there is no resistance to the government’s eviction drive. The current modi-led regime in india is ruling in kashmir through fear and intimidation.

Kashmir’s civil society crushed

The indian government has crushed the civil society in kashmir that would work as a buffer between the state and the people. Most of the civil society members are incarcerated in different jails across kashmir. Similarly, kashmiri human rights activists have also been jailed for one or the other pretext. Therefore, there is really no one in kashmir who would talk to the government on behalf of the kashmiri people to stop this eviction drive. The leadership that would steer kashmir through this difficult drive is in indian jails.

Indian civil society not forthcoming

The modi-led indian government has also silenced civil society and human rights organizations in india. Members of indian civil society that were sympathetic to kashmiri people and human rights organizations in india have been silenced. Amnesty international’s indian branch was also shut down after the government went after it for receiving alleged illegal foreign funding. This has left kashmiris without any allies in india. Nobody now talks about the indian government’s wrongdoings in india. Also read: police attach properties in kashmir for harbouring militantsAlso read: india bans falah-e-aam trust (fat) schools in kashmir

Media in india silenced

The media in kashmir does not really report anything beyond what the government tells them to report. Kashmiri media outlets and journalists have been reduced to stenographers who just parrot the sentences that the government’s public relations department feeds them. There have been no independent reports on the eviction drive by any media outlet in kashmir. It must be mentioned that the government successfully silenced the media in kashmir after it jailed many journalists for reporting anti-national news. The jailed journalists have been upheld as an example by the government for other journalists in kashmir.Similarly, the media in india has been silent on the eviction drive in kashmir. All the media outlets except a few independent outlets have defected to the government’s side. The independent media outlets are very cautious with their news reports as the government has filed many against all of them. The state of media in india as well as kashmir has made it impossible to get any news on kashmir that is critical of the government. Also read: lawlessness in police custody- custodial killings in kashmir

Digitization and privacy

Interestingly, the eviction drive came after the government digitized the land records. Nobody had thought the digitization of land records would be used to evict kashmiri people from their homes. Now the government has said that it intends to give every family in kashmir a unique number to identify it. The purpose of such an exercise is supposed to provide services in a hassle-free manner. However, the kashmiri people cannot believe any such word from the government. It would interfere with the privacy of the people and would lead to dislodging of the kashmiri people.

The eviction drive is one of the many inhuman policies that the indian government has implemented in kashmir. Before the eviction drive, the government brought a media policy in order to silence the media. Similarly, the properties of people who are supposedly anti-nationals were seized earlier by the government. Many people are in jail for alleged anti-national activities. The indian government is not going to stop here and will come up with other policies in future to make sure kashmiri people are completely disempowered.

Rebuilding Sri Lanka – the End of Sri Lank’s Economic Crisis?

After living through the worst Sri Lanka economic crisis since its independence in 1949, Sri Lanka- the south Asian island nation – is finally stabilizing. At least from the surface. While the situation is still dire, economists and the government are coming up with new plans to rebuild the country’s economy with promises of better times.

Sri Lank – The Tale of a Bankrupt Country

2022 marked the rock bottom of Sri Lanka’s crippling economy, with the country declaring bankruptcy. The nation ran out of food, energy, and field. Inflation peaked at around 90% during the worst phase, and over 300,000 residents left Sri Lanka for livelihood and a better life. Now, however, things are seemingly getting back on track. Inflation has come down to 59%. The long fuel lines and month-long protests are gone.  Sri Lanka economic crisis The government, along with the support of international bodies, is planning long-term solutions to rebuild the economy and take the country out of bankruptcy.

Sri Lanka- The IMF Deal & the Challenges

The island nations are grappling with challenges ranging from foreign currency to runaway inflation of 56% and a steep recession. To cope with the demands, the Sri Lankan government has increased taxes and significantly cut down subsidiaries over the already distressed 22 million citizens.

In April, the government negotiated a $2.9 billion bailout from International Monetary Fund. However, the IMF will only approve a $2.9 billion loan to address the Sri Lankan crisis if the country receives debt relief assurances from its bilateral creditors.

According to the World Bank, A significant portion, approximately $52 billion, of Sri Lanka’s debt comes from sources such as international lending organizations and government bonds. Of this, over 40% is owed to bilateral creditors, with China (52%), Japan (19%), and India (12%) being the largest ones. The Sri Lankan government reports that China, as the leading individual lender, has an outstanding debt of around $7 billion. The Paris Club, consisting of wealthy western creditors, and India have formally backed the loan restructuring by the multilateral lender, with China – Sri Lanka’s largest lender – as the only holdout.

Debt Restructuring: Where Does China Stands?

Debt restructuring is renegotiating the terms of existing loans and debts to make them more manageable and sustainable. The main goal of debt restructuring is to reduce the country’s overall debt burden and improve its ability to repay its creditors.Fortunately for Sri Lanka, most creditors agree with its restructuring except China. However, the IMF expressed a willingness to help China understand the issue of debt sustainability. And how its support can help the debt strike the country.A few days after the Indian foreign affair, minister S. Jaishankar finalized its debt restructuring plan; in his 2-day visit to the island nation, China also expressed its support to help Colombo secure a bailout. In response to Sri Lank, the Chinese bank responded with a two-year moratorium on debt. This will be a two-year suspension on the payments debts owed to China. The relieving letter arrived on Chinese new year. However, it’s now yet to be determined if the Chinese assurance contained in the letter would meet the requirement of the IMF and the Paris club. Also, the two-year debt suspension is not yet confirmed by Chinese officials.Experts still believe that China might not bail out Sir Lanka since, by doing so, the debt-giant regime will open doors for its debtor countries would follow the lead.

Is Debt Cancellation the Solution?

Several prominent economists and academics, including Dani Rodrik, Thomas Piketty, and Jayati Ghosh, have made a public request to cancel Sri Lanka’s debt owed to foreign lenders. They also want steps to stop illegal money from leaving the country. This statement was put together by the “Debt Justice” campaign group, a global effort to end unfair debt and the poverty and inequality it causes.Economists and scholars have claimed that the private lenders played a role in Sri Lanka’s first default on its sovereign debt by lending money at a higher cost and making a large profit. Therefore, they believe that these private lenders, who gained from the higher returns, should accept the consequences of their actions and have their debt canceled, which would also mean giving up their loans. But the opinion is not popular amongst everyone.

WA Wijewardene, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, has expressed concern that if the plan to cancel Sri Lanka’s debt is carried out, it could cause the entire global financial system to fail.Others believe that debt cancellation can put the current interdependent and interconnected systems at stake, putting other in-debt countries in the queue for the same.

Difficult Times Ahead of Sri Lanka

Despite the efforts, Sri Lank still has a long way to go. For example, two in five households’ food eat up 75% of their total expense, whereas 30% of the population is going through food insecurity.Recovering economic stability after decades of a crumbling economy will take time to restabilize. The sad reality- dozens of smaller nations are following in the footsteps of Sri Lanks. Worsened by the economic slowdown in the west, the financial blow of the pandemic, and skyrocketing prices due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the world is tracing back to economists’ fear that Sri Lanka would not be the last. However, how Sri Lanka recovers from its economic catastrophe can teach struggling countries how to weather the bankruptcy storm.

Shein Exposed – the Dark Side of China’s Fast Fashion Giant

Shein – one of the world’s top fast fashion websites, popular for its cheap and trendy clothing, has enjoyed explosive growth over the past years. Courtesy of thousands of sponsored fashion hauls and cheap laborers, the company is more popular than ever.

But there’s a dark side Shein doesn’t want you to know – the real cost of fast fashion. In this article, we will unveil the reality of how Shien is providing ultra-cheap fashion, the toll it has on the environment, and how it’s shaping today’s mindless consumerism.

Shein – More than a Fast Fashion Brand

Over the years, She-in has gone from being a low-cost Chinese apparel merchant to a global online fashion giant. Its sales skyrocketed from $10 billion in 2020 to over $100 billion in 2022. The biggest Unique Selling Point (USP) of the brand is low-price trendy clothing, majorly catering to Gen Z women. Shein Exposed The company mass produces thousands of products daily in its 6,000 clothing factories across China. According to Rest of World, the brand includes 2,000 to 10,000 new styles each day, a majority of which are copied from other popular brands or small-scale designers. But behind the glamourous shield of Shein lies the dirty reality about how the company is able to produce so much at low prices. Blue color laborers forced to work 75-hour shifts with very little time off, and mostly under unfit conditions, are at the heart of the company.

Atrocious Working Conditions

Multiple reports and investigations have exposed how the company consistently violates Chinese labor laws. Journalists have uncovered concrete evidence that Shien’s $7 crop tops were made by workers in unsafe workshops working on minimum wage (often without contracts.)

“Inside The Shein Machine,” a Channel 4 documentary, revealed the harsh reality of factory workers through undercover footage. These workers were made to work 17-hour shifts to produce hundreds of garments daily. In one factory, they were paid a base salary of $20 per day, which would be deducted by $14 for every garment with mistakes.

Environmental Impact

The cheap, readily available fabric of choice from Shein is virgin polyester, a material that is not only highly polluting but also incredibly persistent. Its production process releases three times more carbon than cotton, and unlike biodegradable cotton, polyester never breaks down. This is a devastating reality, and it’s Time for a change.Fast fashion garbage dumpsFast fashion garbage dumpsAccording to Time, the company releases over 6.3 million tons of CO2 per year. However, Shein is not alone climate culprit here. Across the board, the fashion industry accounts for about 10% of carbon emissions.Landfills are overwhelmed with a staggering 93 million tons of textile waste annually, much of which is burned and releases harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.

The Impact of “Fashion Haul” Influencing

Social media is filled with influencers packing huge boxes of fashion-forward, cheap polyester clothing. For those unfamiliar, fashion hauls are young social media creators showing off their latest fashion purchase, rating the product, and recommending the right one to their millions of followers. Titled “Summer fashion haul” and “Bought all this under $50 only”, these videos are mostly targeted to GenZ with the aim to spark a desire to buy the displayed look.

The result – mindless consumerism!

Evoking FOMO in the viewers, these hauls play a crucial part in glorifying fast fashion and normalizing shopping in large quantities. A majority of which is disposed of after a few times.SHEIN FASHION HAULPromoting driven-to-shop psychology, these fashion hauls have become immensely popular with the hashtag #hauls over 13 billion views and #clothinghaul about 1 billion on TikTok. A majority of these hauls are powered by Shien, with the hashtag #sheinhauls 3.8 million views on the platform. The fashion hauls are Shein’s critical marketing strategy. Their affiliate collaboration with influencers who gets a 10%-20% commission on each purchase is one of the key reasons why the fast fashion website became the giant it is today.

Shein is on a Decline

Shein, the fast-fashion brand known for its cheap and trendy clothing, has seen a meteoric rise in recent years. However, its sales took a sharp turn in 2022 for the first time since the pandemic, with a few reasons behind the drop. The slowing post-pandemic economy has left shoppers with less disposable income to spend, and persistent accusations of poor clothing quality, worker mistreatment, and unethical business practices may have finally caught up to the brand.According to Brandwatch, 70% of online conversations about Shein were negative between 2020 and 2023. However, despite these challenges, Shein remains optimistic and reportedly seeks $3 billion to fuel its expansion in 2023.

The Problem is Bigger than Just Shein

Reports of Shein abusing its workers, producing harmful clothing, and worsening the planet have been circling for years. Still, the brand is thriving with more customers than ever. This sparks the question – Is Shein really the problem? And we know the answer. Shein, or any fast fashion brand, has transformed the fashion industry because of multifaceted factors, including affordability, convince, emotional connection, and above all, social pressure. We are contributing to the exploitation of minimum-wage laborersWe see it, we are engaging with it every day on social media, and we are ridden with negative emotions like addiction and guilt. According to ThredUP, one in three Gen Z feels assisted to fast fashion, whereas one in five feels pressured to keep up with the latest fashion trends.

But that’s not what fashion is about. Created as a medium of self-expression and creativity – today, the industry has taken a 180-degree turn. And sadly, it’s no foreseeable end to the trend. However, a huge section of the population is standing up against fast-fashion brands like Shein.

The Need to Adopt Responsible Fashion

The industry is huge, and Shein is not the only culprit. By engaging in the fast fashion trends, we are giving the green light to brands like Shiens to continue labor exploitation and release humongous amounts of toxic chemicals.

But by educating and supporting ethical and truly sustainable fashion brands, we stand a chance to snowball a positive change in the industry. Fortunately, the trend of responsible fashion is already catching on with young shoppers.

The Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Will More States Seek to Acquire Nuclear Weapons?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is prompting many states around the world to reconsider their national defence strategies. Governments have privately and openly voiced their apprehension about the growing fragility of the post-WWII international order, especially the utter inability of the UN and its Security Council to prevent powerful hegemonic nations, such as Russia, from attacking and occupying and annexing large territories of less powerful neighbours, such as Ukraine

Some leaders and diplomats have warned that, in light of the clear impotence of the UN in tackling the Ukrainian crisis,  and in the absence of a nuclear deterrent of their own, some vulnerable non-nuclear states will be forced to either acquire Nuclear weapons to achieve a semblance of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) vis-à-vis potential predators or seek a military alliance with some established nuclear powers for the same purpose

Zelensky: “Ukraine will be like a Big Israel”

Speaking to reporters a few days ago, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy  told reporters that post-war Ukraine  would be like “a big Israel.”

He didn’t clarify what he exactly meant by drawing the Israeli analogy.

However, it was amply clear that he was alluding to the contemplated acquisition of a sizeable Nuclear weapon, like that of Israel, in order to deter a future possible Russian invasion. Ukraine had given up its Nuclear weapons to Russia following the downfall of the former Soviet Union.

However, experts argue that Ukraine could fairly quickly renew its Nuclear weapon since the country already possesses the technical and scientific infrastructure which it inherited from the Soviet era.

Hence, Ukraine wouldn’t have to begin from scratch in case it decided to renew its nuclear weapon program.  Moreover, Ukraine could start producing enriched uranium for military purposes in a few days, depending on the decision of the political leadership.  Shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine 11 months ago, Ukraine’s defence officials voiced their deep remorse for having given up their former nuclear arsenal. In light, it is almost certain that the current leadership in Kyiv will decide to revive the nuclear option as soon as an opportune time arises.

Medvedev: Russian defeat in Ukraine would trigger a nuclear war

Nuclear weapon in Russia. The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine is prompting many states to acquire nuclear weapons

This weak, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev warned NATO of nuclear war if Russia was defeated in Ukraine.

Medvedev, an ally of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, warned that a Russian defeat in Ukraine could trigger a nuclear war. “The defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war may trigger a nuclear war,” Medvedev, who serves as deputy chairman of Putin’s powerful security council, reportedly said in a post on the Telegraph.

“Nuclear powers have never lost major conflicts on which their fate depends,”

Warning should be taken seriously

Undoubtedly, Medvedev’s warnings contain an important element of rhetorical sabre-rattling and psychological warfare. However, this writer believes the West ought to take the warnings quite seriously.

There are sufficient reasons that should make us think twice before dismissing the above doomsday warnings as hot air. Indeed, a Russian defeat in Ukraine would have far-reaching global consequences and ramifications.

Indeed, a decisive and humiliating Russian defeat in Ukraine would very likely be the most important strategic international game-changer not only since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1989 but also since the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Russia. Russia would morph into a boiling cauldron of anger and furious indignation.

Thus, the demand for the use of nuclear weapons to avert a possible Russian defeat in Ukraine would gain massive popularity throughout Russia. The galvanization of Russia’s 145  million population would be the penultimate step leading to the kremlin’s decision to press the nuclear button.

Nuclear is futile if not used when needed

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Advocates for the nuclear option would convincingly argue that nuclear weapons would lose their raison detre if they failed to protect the possessor country, the motherland, when needed most, e.g., when the country faces the prospect of defeat and humiliation in war. The question of who is the aggressor and who is the victim would be almost irrelevant in such an atmosphere. Moreover, the US, which used the first ever and last nuclear weapon against Japan in 1945, would not be in a moral position to lecture Russia on the evils of using nuclear weapons.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine: Gigantic Dilemma

A Russian victory or defeat in Ukraine would cause the current international order,  instated after WWII,  to collapse. A decisive Russian defeat in Ukraine, which seems unlikely at least now,  would likely irreversibly paralyze or effectively terminate the UN and its Security Council. The UN would virtually become completely at the US beck and call.

On the other hand, a decisive Russian victory, which is also unlikely, would turn the international order upside down and transform the world into a real jungle.

A Russian victory would probably encourage certain states to emulate Russia and carry out naked aggressions of their own against militarily weaker foes or neighbouring states. Certain possible scenarios come to the mind in this regard.China might be emboldened to invade and occupy Taiwan if Russia emerged as winner.

Israel might well decide to seize the opportunity and  wage an all-out war on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip for the purpose of liquidating the Palestinian issue once and for all. In the process, Israel might carry out huge massacres of Palestinians and embark on the demolition of Islamic holy places in Jerusalem especially the Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock.  Moreover, Israel might also decide to carry out massive airstrikes on Iranian cities or even drop nuclear bombs under the rubric of destroying the Iranian nuclear program and preventing the recurrence of the Holocaust!

Other possible scenarios would probably include a possible all-out war by North Korea against South Korea, and a naked aggression by Russian-backed  Serbia against  Bosnia and Kosovo.

Conclusion

I am not a prophet of doom and gloom, but it is always safer to assume that the worse could happen. There is no doubt that a new world order would appear after the end of the Russian invasion of Ukraine regardless of the outcome of the war . There is also little doubt that the post-Ukraine war will witness more military and strategic polarization than ever. However, the gravest problem facing the post-war world order would, almost certainly, take the form of many states seeking actively to acquire nuclear weapons for their own national defence. Therefore, the nuclear proliferation issue would be the number-1 problem facing the world, with the chances of a nuclear accident or miscalculation reaching terrifying levels.

BBC’s Modi Documentary Rattles Modi Government

BCC recently released a documentary on India’s controversial right-wing Prime Minister Narendra Modi rattling Modi and his ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The documentary’s first episode titled “India: The Modi Question” which was released in the UK on 17th January drew a sharp reaction from the Modi government.

Modi Government Blocks the Documentary in India

The Modi government moved swiftly to block the documentary in India. Proving right the critics of IT Rules, 2021, the Modi government’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting invoked emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021 to order YouTube to take down all the videos that had published the first episode of the documentary. Orders were also issued to Twitter to take down all the tweets that had posted the link to the document. Both YouTube and Twitter complied with the orders, removing all the posts and videos flagged by the government.

The government alleged that the documentary was found to be “undermining sovereignty and integrity of India, and having the potential to adversely impact India’s friendly relations with foreign states”, which allowed for the invocation of the emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021. The government also alleged that the documentary questions the credibility of the Supreme Court of India and attempts to sow divisions among different communities while also making unsubstantiated allegations regarding the activities of foreign governments in India.

Earlier India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson dismissed the documentary as a “propaganda piece that lacks objectivity and reflects colonial mindset”

The spokesperson also questioned the timings of the release of the documentary.

The Documentary

The documentary’s first episode produced by the BBC tracks Modi’s “first steps into politics”- his association with the right-wing Hindu extremist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), his rise through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and further his appointment as Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat in 2001 till 2014. As the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi’s involvement in and his response to a series of communal riots in 2002 remains a source of controversy.

The documentary highlights a previously unpublished report, obtained by the BBC from the British Foreign Office, which raises questions about Modi’s actions during the religious riots. The report claims that Modi was “directly responsible” for the “climate of impunity” that enabled the violence.

The report cited by the BCC was part of an inquiry ordered by the then foreign secretary Jack Straw. The reports say that “the extent of violence was much greater than reported” and “the aim of the riots was to purge Muslims from Hindu areas”.

Jack Straw is heard in the documentary saying, “these were very serious claims that Mr Modi had played a proactive part in pulling back police and in tacitly encouraging the Hindu extremists. That was a particularly egregious example of political involvement to prevent police from doing their job to protect the Hindus and the Muslims.”

Modi’s Role in Gujarat Riots of 2002

It is the documentary’s highlight of the Gujarat riots of 2002 that has rattled the Modi government.

The Gujarat riots of 2002 claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people. Most of those killed were Muslims. Modi is alleged to have instigated the riots and further prevented the police and the army from taking any action to stop the riots. BBC’s Modi Documentary Most of the reports published on the Gujarat riots by the Indian media as well as the international media point out Modi’s direct role in facilitating the riots. It has been claimed that Modi gave a free hand to Hindu extremists to kill Muslims and the aim was to purge Hindu localities of Muslims.

Modi has rejected these accusations. Further, in 2013 an investigation approved by the Indian Supreme Court absolved Mr. Modi of complicity in the rioting. Based on that finding, a court in the state of Gujarat found that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him.

Action Taken by Foreign Countries against Modi

Like the above-cited British Foreign Office report, there were many countries that were convinced of Modi’s role in the killing of Muslims during the riots. Concerned countries acted against Modi at different levels.

Modi was banned entry into the U.S. for more than a decade for his role in the riots. In 2005, Modi became the only person ever to be denied a U.S. visa under the 1998 law on violations of religious freedom. The U.S. State Department invoked a little-known U.S. law passed in 1998 that makes foreign officials responsible for “severe violations of religious freedom” ineligible for visas. The ban on Modi’s travel to the U.S. was revoked by the Obama administration in 2014 after he became the prime minister of India.

A Permanent Stain on Modi’s Career

Modi may have achieved great things in his political career, but the stain of the Gujarat riots is permanent on his career.

Modi loves the camera. He loves advertising and branding himself. Modi puts his picture on everything. He loves hearing his voice. However, ever since he became the prime minister of India, he has never given an unscripted interview to the media. He has also never held a press conference in India or abroad. It has been claimed that Modi does not want difficult questions about his attitude towards the Muslim minority of India thrown at him.

When Modi became the prime minister of India, Indian liberals were hopeful that Modi had changed. They were wrong in their assessment that Modi as a prime minister would be inclusive. However, after Modi’s eight years as a prime minister now, he has not changed his attitude towards Muslims. As of now, Muslims are increasingly persecuted by his government.
